Influence of ultrafast laser texturing on hydrogen uptake and diffusion in metallic materials

Post-doctoral fellow: Anthony NAKHOUL

ABSTRACT

When metallic materials are exposed to a hydrogen-rich environment, a decrease of their mechanical properties is observed. In order to mitigate such a phenomenon, one possibility is to reduce hydrogen uptake. However this implies a deeper comprehension of the interaction between hydrogen and the surface. In this project, it is proposed to explore the influence of the surface topography on hydrogen uptake. To do so, topography will be controlled by surface laser texturing. Textured samples will be then charged with hydrogen and analyzed. Such experiments would permit to question the concept of surface functionalization as a way to reduce hydrogen embrittlement. It will also allow a better understanding of the physical phenomenon involve at the surface scale.
