LoRIBAM - Research project
Longitudinal Registration of 3D CT Images for Bone adaptation Analysis in Microgravity
PhD student: Elisa BARBAROUX
ABSTRACT
The LoRIBAM project aims to evaluate the impact of these countermeasures on bone loss during spaceflight and in simulated microgravity (bed rest). Indeed, bed rest (where people remain lying down for several days) simulate microgravity’s effects on body on Earth. Bone changes occur on a micrometer scale, which requires high-resolution imaging such as HR-pQCT. This technique provides an image of the bone microarchitecture of the tibia and radius over a few centimeters. From these images, numerous parameters related to bone quality, architecture, and strength can be quantified. The project will combine: strength estimation and 3D image registration to detect sites of remodeling, with the aim of establishing a link between remodeling and mechanical loading.Biomarkers will also be measured and combined with the above data to better understand bone adaptation to microgravity and to evaluate the effectiveness of countermeasures aimed at limiting this remodeling in microgravity.
