Advanced Laser Patterning for Engineering of Standardized Bio-chips

Internship student: to be confirmed

ABSTRACT

Ultrafast laser micro-/nano-patterning and surface functionalization have been proven to be a powerful tool for biological and bio-medical applications. A handful of projects in such disciplines have been carried out in the context of Manutech-SLEIGHT and Labex, all of which produced promising results, with some of which even lead to greater follow-up projects at national level and international level. Notwithstanding, for each and every project, the initial phase of surface design of the micro-/nano-structures has always been extremely time consuming, which is always a huge obstacle. For instance, samples after laser irradiation need months or even longer to stabilize, before they can be used for biology/bio-medical assessments. Laser facilities down time could also be an issue sometimes.
A standardized bio-chips with a vast variety of nanostructures on the chip for fast screenings would be of common interest for many related research activities. Once these bio-chips are fabricated and conditioned, they can be deployed at any time for any bio-assessments. The standard bio-chips would save the initial months of sample stabilization time, and the fast screening would give inspirations for advanced designs / optimization process. Multiscale patterning (wavelength mixing, polarization mixing) could also be explored and their potentials could be evaluated.
