12th SLEIGHT Science Event: 3 days dedicated to the topic “Imaging in Manutech-SLEIGHT"
On The July 15, 2024
The Manutech-SLEIGHT Graduate School organised its 12th SLEIGHT Science Event from July 8th to 10th at Telecom Saint Etienne's premises (Université Jean Monnet Saint-Etienne), bringing together around a hundred scientists to discuss on the topic "Imaging in Manutech-SLEIGHT" including computational reproducibility in imaging, phase contrast in x-ray imaging, electron microscopy in biology and medicine. The scientific chairs of this SSE#12 were Lucian Roiban (CNRS - INSA, Lab MatéIS), Corinne Fournier (UJM, Lab Hubert Curien), Laurence Vico (Inserm, Lab Saibiose) and Olivier Beuf (CNRS, Lab CREATIS).
As it is the case every year in July, the Graduate School got together for three days during which students were given the occasion to take part. The participants had the opportunity to attend 5 courses with 6 invited lecturers. A "Junior Scientist" session was organised to allow PhD students and young doctors to present their work in front of their peers, researchers and the jury. 4 visits were organized to allow the participants to discover or rediscover the equipment available on the Manufacture Campus.
A HIGH-LEVEL SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME COVERING MANY TOPICS AROUND IMAGING
To provide students and researchers with a multi-disciplinary perspective, six keynote lecturers have been invited to present their cutting-edge research areas:
- Ruth Sims, Postdoctoral researcher at Inserm, Institut de la Vision (CNRS, Sorbonne Université) gave a talk on "Parallel two-photon optogenetics and voltage imaging";
- Olivier Haeberlé, Professor at IRIMAS, Université de Haute Alsace, presented the principles of image formation in conventional transmission microscopy, classical contrast enhancement techniques and digital holographic microscopy;
- Renaud Podor, CNRS Research Engineer at ICSM and Philippe Steyer, Professor at INSA-Lyon, Laboratoire MatéIS, gave a course on understanding image formation and the associated analytical techniques but also made a focus in two parts. Thin film metallic glass (TFMGs) on the one hand, plasmonic films on the other hand, for which a specific in situ microscopic approach was developped;
- Sorina Pop, Research Engineer at CNRS, Lab CREATIS (INSA-Lyon, UCBL1, Inserm, UJM) presented the computational reproducibility with an overview illustrated with examples from the medical imaging research community;
- Emmanuel Brun, Research Director at Inserm, Lab STROBE, presented the principles and applications of the x-ray phase contrast and dark-field imaging;
3 STUDENTS AWARDED FOR THEIR PRESENTATIONS AND INVOLVEMENT IN THE GRADUATE SCHOOL’S ACTIVITIES
Melis COBAN, PhD student at the BiiO laboratory, was awarded the Best PhD Presentation Prize during the “Junior Scientist” session and Anthony NAKHOUL, Post-Doctoral fellow at the Hubert Curien laboratory was awarded the Best Post-Doctoral Fellow Presentation Prize during this same session.Sofiane FRAINE, PhD student at the BiiO laboratory was also awarded for his involvement in the Graduate School’s activities by participating in the 7th, 8th and 9th SLEIGHT Science Events, presenting a pitch during this last one and making an interview presenting his master programme and his internship at the BiiO laboratory.
Sofiane Fraine, PhD student at the BiiO lab (Faculté de Médecine, UJM, Saint-Etienne) awarded for the Manutech-SLEIGHT Certificate (with Pierre Chavel, IOGS - Lab Hubert Curien, Head of the Educational Committee of Manutech-SLEIGHT)

Anthony Nakhoul, Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Hubert Curien lab (UJM, Saint-Etienne) (with (left) Donata Iandolo, Inserm - Lab Sainbiose, and (right) Florent Bourquard, UJM - Lab Hubert Curien, Chairs of the "Junior Scientist" session of the SSE#12 and (right) Pierre Chavel, IOGS - Lab Hubert Curien, Head of the Educational Committee of Manutech-SLEIGHT)
The SSE#12 programme committee would like to thank all the speakers, participants and organisers. A huge thank you to Telecom Saint-Etienne for hosting the event on its premises, and in particular to its IT, reception and logistics teams for their invaluable help in organising this event.
We would also like to thank Saint-Etienne Métropole for their support and for making the High Technology Building (BHT) available to us.
See you at Jean Monnet University next winter from January 9th to 15th for the 13th SLEIGHT Science Event dedicated to all the topics of Manutech-SLEIGHT.
