PE - Photonics Engineering

The specialty in Photonics Engineering* was created by the LabEx Manutech-SISE to offer the full set of academic courses and teach a knowledge-based approach in the fields of surface and interface science and technology (development and application of fiber optics or waveguide components or sensors, characterization of surfaces).

The curriculum of this track provides students a level to the state of the art in:
  • Surface and Interfaces properties,
  • Techniques to surface characterisation,
  • Techniques to realise structured surfaces, mainly by laser processing
  • Laser & Laser-matter interaction
  • Interaction of radiation with matter
  • Electromagnetic modelling
  • Plasmonic
  • Guided optics
  • Thin-Films
  • Radiometry - Colorimetry - Material appearance

*The Photonics Engineering master track was formerly known as the Surface & Interface Science & Engineering - SISE master track

RESEARCH AREAS

Development and application of structured surfaces for:
  • Measurements: temperature, strain, spectroscopy, …
  • Decoration
  • Security
  • Safety

PREREQUISITES

Applicants must have a general background in physics with knowledge of:
  • Optics & Photonics
  • Electromagnetism
  • Interferences & diffraction
  • Quantum mechanic
  • Computer programming (Matlab, Python, …)
  • Electricity & Electronic

EMPLOYABILITY

The MSc OIVM's specilisation in Photonics Engineering is designed to address industries’ needs and challenges. It also opens up for international and challenging career opportunities, since the demand for postgraduates related to surface and interfaces - properties, characterizations, applications and modifications (mainly optical fs-laser) - is very high on the international job market.
