13th SLEIGHT Science Event (“SLEIGHT in 2025”): More than 200 participants for this new science week of the Graduate School Manutech-SLEIGHT

The Manutech-SLEIGHT Graduate School organised its 13th SLEIGHT Science Event from 9 to 14 January 2025 at Telecom Saint Etienne's premises (Université Jean Monnet Saint Etienne), bringing together more than 200 participants to discuss all the Manutech-SLEIGHT themes: Optics-Photonics, Machine Learning, Surface Engineering, Image Science, Artificial Intelligence and Bioengineering.

As it is the case every year in January, the Graduate School got together for a science week during which students (master and PhD) were given the opportunity to take part. They had the opportunity to discover the state of the art of research during four classes based on several topics.

Two sessions (Pitch and Poster session) brought to light students' research work. During the two Pitch sessions, 36 Master students split in 17 groups demonstrated their ability to give an oral presentation of their research project or topic. The Poster session welcomed 32 participants (master students, PhD students, post-docs and researchers) who presented 21 Posters based on the progress of their projects.

The aim of the week was to bring students and researchers together around common themes - imaging, optics, lasers, machine learning - to facilitate exchanges and to present the opportunities offered by the Graduate School to its members.

A HIGH-LEVEL SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME COVERING ALL SLEIGHT’S TOPICS

Hugues BERRY, Research Director at Inria Lyon (Project-Team AlstroSight), talked about the using simulation-based methods to characterize the dance of molecules in living cells.
David GROJO, Research Director at Aix-Marseille University was the second guest speaker of our 13th SLEIGHT Science Event. He presented the new dimensions open to ultrafast laser material processing.
Maxime MOREAUD, Researcher and Project Leader at IFP Energies Nouvelles gave a talk on Artificial Intelligence: demystification and illustrations for imaging.
Christelle DER LOUGHIAN, Associate Professor at Laboratoire MateIS (INSA Lyon) presented the development and evaluation of biomaterials at the interface between biology and physics.

Margarita CARRET, Mateo MORALES GUZMAN, Sofiane IBRAHIM and Elias NUSSBAUMER, master students - Institut d'Optique Graduate School/ Master OIVM AIMA - Université Jean Monnet Saint-Etienne - Faculté des Sciences et Techniques - for their nice work on "Optical analysis of metallic surfaces" (on right picture).

The Graduate School also recognized the involvement of the Student Chapters OPTICA and SPIE (ASESLEIGHT student associations) who organized a fun activity which aim was to find the “ImPOSTERS” (scientific posters with voluntary subtle errors). This session was a great success!

SCIENTIFIC EXCHANGES DURING WORKSHOPS ON THE 3 SCIENTIFIC AXIS

Each Winter edition of our SLEIGHT Science Event includes 3 workshops on the 3 scientific axes of the programme. This year, 12 doctoral and post-doctoral students working on projects funded by the Graduate School, as well as 2 special guests, presented their work. We had the pleasure to listen to Nikzad MOTAMEDI, Teacher-Researcher at Center for Materials and Processes (IMT Nord Europe, Institut Mines-Télécom, Université de Lille), who presented his research on the analysis of surface geometry using deep learning and applications in surface science. Mahmoud ELSAWY, Research Scientist at Inria Research Center (Université Côte d’Azur, Sophia Antipolis), gave a talk on his research on advanced numerical modelling for innovative passive and tunable metasurface designs.
