EAGLE - Research project

Eye Anterior segment Laser Engineering

ABSTRACT

The eye and the femtosecond laser have long been closely linked. Yesterday, in the United States, the cutting of LASIK caps for myopia was born, with the success that we know. Today, photo-emulsification™ of the lens for cataract surgery was born in France (first patient operated at the end of 2018).
The EAgLE project, bringing together the BiiO, the Hubert Curien Laboratory and the Manutech-USD technical platfrom, proposes two new applications of the laser to the anterior segment of the eye (cornea and lens) to offer an answer to the major challenges of tomorrow.
Corneal re-engineering, thanks to laser cutting and then surfacing of corneas rejected from banks or lens capsules, will combat the global shortage of grafts (in collaboration with the Japanese team in Kyoto, specialising in cell cultures). Modification of the biomechanics of the lens which, with a multi-scale laser technology, will offer the first etiological and non-invasive treatment of presbyopia (collaboration with the Kejako start-up, based in St-Etienne).
